iOS 26 Lets Apple CarPlay Stream Video Content

Apple seems ready to end its long-standing restriction on video playback through CarPlay. With the upcoming iOS 26 update, drivers will be able to project video from their iPhones directly to their vehicle's center display via AirPlay. Apple explains that this will let users “enjoy their favorite iPhone videos right on the CarPlay display—when the vehicle is safely parked.”
First spotted by MacRumors, the functionality is mentioned under “video in the car” on Apple’s developer portal, listed alongside “Automaker apps” and “car keys.” The company is inviting automakers and developers who want “to integrate CarPlay, CarPlay Ultra, AirPlay video, or car keys into your vehicle system” to join its MFi Program.
According to Apple, car manufacturers will need to add explicit support for CarPlay with AirPlay video, meaning the feature won't roll out universally right away. Many automakers are cautious about introducing new technology that might distract drivers, so they will likely insist on safeguards that limit video playback to times when the car is stationary. Concerns about giving Apple too much control over in-car displays also remain a sticking point—which helps explain why Aston Martin is the only automaker so far to publicly endorse the new CarPlay Ultra.
Apple states that automakers must integrate support for CarPlay with AirPlay video, so the feature won’t be instantly available across all vehicles.
An Apple representative did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding automaker adoption or hardware requirements.
Plenty of modern vehicles, particularly electric models, already offer video streaming or gaming features while parked. Some brands, especially those using Google’s built-in Android-based infotainment systems, have started including native YouTube apps. Tesla offers a Theater mode supporting Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and other platforms. Other manufacturers with passenger or rear-seat screens also enable various video streaming services.
Additionally, there are already unofficial methods for watching video through CarPlay using third-party adapters or jailbreak modifications.

So they're finally letting us watch videos while the car is parked? About time! 😅 But seriously, hope they have some rock-solid safety features for this. Can already see some drivers trying to sneak a peek at a show while driving... maybe a speed sensor lock would be smart? Still, long road trips just got way better for passengers!
