John Trenor, Apple’s head of hardware engineering, is set to assume the CEO role on September 1, with artificial intelligence designated as his primary focus. The company previously announced that current CEO Tim Cook will transition to Executive Chairman of the Board, paving the way for Trenor’s appointment.
With 25 years of experience in hardware product development, Trenor has contributed to the creation of the Mac, iPad, AirPods, and iPhone. Industry analysts suggest he will need to address challenges such as Apple’s slower-than-expected AI progress, decelerating service business growth, and increasing supply chain expenses. According to tech journalist Mark Gurman, Apple intends to fully launch a new version of Siri AI in September and advance a lineup of AI-driven hardware, including smart home devices that identify users and deliver personalized content, AirPods with cameras and environmental awareness, and smart glasses.
Additionally, Trenor is integrating AI into product development, hardware testing, and device reliability enhancements, indicating that AI will further permeate Apple’s internal R&D and manufacturing processes.
