Anthropic Spends Over €2.8 Billion to Acquire Stainless, Locking In AI Development Connection Layer

Competition in artificial intelligence is now extending to the underlying toolchain. According to IT Home, Anthropic, the AI large model unicorn, recently announced it has acquired software infrastructure startup Stainless. While the official transaction amount was not disclosed, multiple industry sources report the deal exceeded €280 million (around ¥2.218 billion).
Founded in 2022, Stainless plays a key role in the AI development ecosystem. Its core technology automates the creation and maintenance of software development kits (SDKs). The platform lets developers convert API specifications directly into deployable tools, and it fully supports mainstream programming languages like Python, TypeScript, and Java.
Blocking Competitors' Toolchains
The biggest advantage of this technology is its ability to automatically update code when external interfaces change. This cuts down the time developers spend on manual maintenance and lowers costs for teams that rely on external APIs.
Before the acquisition, Stainless's automated tools were part of the industry's shared infrastructure. Now that it has been officially integrated into Anthropic, these core resources become internal exclusive assets, and external competitors can no longer access them.
Industry Structure Faces Reconfiguration
As a result, Stainless has confirmed the closure of all its hosted products and will no longer offer its original automated generation services externally. Although existing customers still own the code libraries they previously generated, they will no longer receive official technical support or updates.
The strategic significance of this deal extends well beyond a typical commercial acquisition. Companies like OpenAI and Google were once important customers of the platform. Anthropic's move secures critical connection capabilities for AI agent development ahead of time, giving its own product iterations and external software collaboration greater control.
