Anthropic Secures $3.5B for AI Expansion

On Monday, AI startup Anthropic announced a significant fundraising achievement, securing $3.5 billion in a Series E round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. This round, which also saw investments from Bessemer Venture Partners, Cisco Investments, D1 Capital Partners, Fidelity Management & Research Company, General Catalyst, Jane Street, Menlo Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures, has pushed Anthropic's total funding to $18.2 billion, according to Crunchbase.
In a blog post, Anthropic outlined plans to use the new funds to advance the development of next-generation AI systems, boost its computing capacity, delve deeper into research on mechanistic interpretability and alignment, and speed up its international expansion efforts. The company aims to create AI systems that act as true collaborators, assisting teams with complex projects, synthesizing information across various fields, and helping organizations make a significant impact.
This fundraising comes on the heels of Anthropic's launch of its latest flagship AI model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet. This "hybrid reasoning" model is designed to consider queries more thoughtfully before responding and is part of Anthropic's effort to streamline the user experience with its AI products. Unlike many AI chatbots that require users to navigate through multiple model options, Anthropic seeks to simplify this process with a single, versatile model.
Anthropic's business has seen robust growth, with its annual revenue run rate reaching approximately $1 billion last year and increasing by 30% in 2025, largely driven by its API and subscriptions to its AI chatbot, Claude. However, the company is also facing substantial expenses, with an expected burn rate of $3 billion this year, as reported by The Information.
To enhance profitability, Anthropic is diversifying its offerings with new tools and subscription levels, including computer-using "agents," a desktop client, and mobile applications. The company has also expanded its global presence by opening offices in Europe and making notable hires, such as Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger, OpenAI co-founder Durk Kingma, and former OpenAI safety researcher Jan Leike.
Anthropic has also deepened its ties with Amazon, which has become a major investor and partner. In November, Amazon invested an additional $4 billion in Anthropic and committed to optimizing its custom AI chips, Trainium, for Anthropic's model training needs. The collaboration extends to enhancing Amazon's upgraded Alexa virtual assistant, Alexa+, which now incorporates Anthropic's models.
Founded in 2021 by CEO Dario Amodei, a former VP of research at OpenAI, Anthropic was established with a team of former OpenAI employees, including Jack Clark, OpenAI's former policy lead. Amodei left OpenAI due to disagreements over its roadmap. Anthropic often emphasizes its commitment to safety, positioning itself as more focused on this aspect than OpenAI.
