Anthropic buys Stainless for $30M to control AI infrastructure and block rivals

Anthropic has officially completed its acquisition of developer tools firm Stainless, with reports indicating the deal value surpasses $30 million, per The Information. Founded by Alex Rattray, a former Stripe engineer, Stainless specializes in automatically generating and maintaining high-quality SDKs for languages like Python and TypeScript via API specifications. This strategic move bolsters Anthropic’s Claude developer ecosystem and strengthens the infrastructure supporting AI agents.
Previously operating as an "infrastructure layer" provider for the AI sector, Stainless served major competitors including OpenAI, Google, Cloudflare, and Runway. Following the acquisition, Anthropic intends to phase out all external hosting services for Stainless. Consequently, industry giants like OpenAI and Google will lose access to this critical automated tooling, forcing a shift back to more expensive and time-consuming manual SDK maintenance.
Industry analysts note that as competition in large model applications intensifies, the speed and reliability of SDK delivery directly impact developer adoption. By internalizing Stainless’ advanced automation engineering capabilities, Anthropic has vertically integrated its technology stack to create a robust ecological barrier. With AI agent API demands growing increasingly complex, controlling this core toolchain positions Anthropic more competitively against OpenAI in the infrastructure landscape.
