Amazon to Introduce Lower-Priced Color Kindle E-Reader

Following the successful launch of the color-screen Kindle Colorsoft last year, Amazon is expanding its e-reader lineup today with two new models: a more affordable 16GB Colorsoft priced at $249.99 and a kid-centric bundle for $269.99. The Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition remains available at $279.99.
“Our customers have embraced reading in color on Kindle—on average, they spend more time with Kindle Colorsoft and read hundreds more pages compared to our other Kindle devices,” the company stated in a blog post. “That’s why we’re thrilled to introduce two new additions to the Kindle Colorsoft family.”
The new budget-friendly Colorsoft is $30 less than the Signature Edition, though the higher-priced model includes extra benefits like 32GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, and wireless charging. The children’s bundle, named Kindle Colorsoft Kids, includes a Colorsoft (the 16GB version, confirmed by spokesperson Connor Rice), a choice of two special covers, and a one-year Amazon Kids+ subscription.
Shortly after its initial release, Amazon temporarily halted shipments of the Signature Edition due to customer reports of a yellow bar appearing on the screen. Amazon has since added a notice to the Signature Edition’s product page acknowledging that “a small number of customers have reported a yellow band.” An Amazon spokesperson informed The Verge that the company implemented “a combination of software and display adjustments” to resolve the problem.
