Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen Technical Director Lin Junyang Announces Departure

The technical lead of the Tongyi Qianwen large language model, Lin Jinyang, recently announced his departure via a social media post, drawing significant attention within the AI community.
On the platform X, Lin Jinyang stated, "I am resigning. Goodbye to my beloved Qianwen." As the youngest P10-level technical lead at Alibaba, born in 1993 and an alumnus of Peking University for both undergraduate and graduate studies, Lin's unique interdisciplinary background in computer science and linguistics is widely regarded as a key contributor to Tongyi Qianwen's exceptional capabilities in semantic understanding and long-context processing.
Lin joined Alibaba's DAMO Academy in 2019 and formally assumed the role of technical lead for the Tongyi Qianwen series following the establishment of the Tongyi Lab in late 2022. Under his leadership, the project maintained a strong commitment to open-source development, consistently ranking at the top on global platforms like Hugging Face. In early March 2026, his team released the highly acclaimed Qwen 3.5 series of compact models, which garnered substantial buzz on international social media, even earning a like from Elon Musk.
The resignation came as a surprise. Just two days prior to his announcement, Lin was actively promoting the launch of the Qwen 3.5 models. A colleague, Chen Cheng, later posted on social media suggesting the departure was not Lin's own decision, hinting that the team was collaboratively preparing a new model release right up until the news broke.
Lin's next steps are currently unknown. Sources indicate that due to the sudden nature of the departure, no clear immediate successor has been designated within the Tongyi Qianwen team. Observers are keen to see whether Lin will transfer to another role within Alibaba, follow the path of entrepreneurs like Zhou Chang, or join a different organization.
As a pivotal figure in China's open-source LLM landscape, Lin's exit marks a significant moment for the Tongyi Qianwen project. With the model's downloads surpassing 600 million and over 170,000 derivative models created, the industry is watching to see if this leadership change will impact the project's continuity and technological roadmap. Subsequent organizational adjustments by Alibaba Cloud will be closely monitored. As of now, Alibaba has not released an official statement regarding this personnel change.
