AI Reimagines 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' Through Four Artists' Eyes
From the printing press to cameras to synthesizers, technology has always sparked new debates about the role of art and artists in society. Now, with generative AI on the scene, creatives are pondering how their work might evolve once more. For our latest Lab Session, we teamed up with four visual artists—Eric Hu, Shawna X, Erik Carter, and Haruko Hayakawa—to dive into the question: "Can AI be a tool that expands an artist's vision and accelerates human imagination?"
Together, we embarked on a journey to create Infinite Wonderland, a groundbreaking experience where these artists fine-tuned an AI model to endlessly reimagine the visual world of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."
How "Infinite Wonderland" Was Made
Taking inspiration from John Tenniel's iconic illustrations, each artist crafted a fresh set of images, visualizing the novel through their unique lens. They brought to life key scenes and characters like Alice, the Mad Hatter, the White Rabbit, and the Queen of Hearts.
Using their original artwork, the artists fine-tuned Google DeepMind's AI image generation model, Imagen 2, to produce an infinite array of images, each reflecting their distinct style.
Traditionally, to replicate a style, you'd need hundreds or even thousands of reference images. But with a technique called StyleDrop, these artists managed to fine-tune the model using just a dozen of their own images. This allowed them to see how their original works influenced the AI's outputs from Imagen 2. Through this iterative process, they could tweak and refine until the model captured the essence of their artistic style.
This innovative fine-tuning method opened up a whole new world of possibilities, enabling the artists to produce work on a scale they'd never imagined before. Now, readers of Infinite Wonderland can generate endless images for each of the book's 1,200 sentences, ensuring a unique experience for every individual.
Human Imagination x Artificial Intelligence
By harnessing StyleDrop on Imagen 2, these artists have pioneered a new form of open-ended storytelling. They're not just creators but co-creators with their audience, sparking their own artistic growth. This collaboration allows them to explore new dimensions of their styles, rapidly generating fresh takes on characters and scenes, and uncovering creative insights they might have otherwise missed.
Infinite Wonderland showcases the potential of co-creating with AI. As our AI models evolve, we're eager to see how artists will continue to push the boundaries of creativity and technology. In the meantime, why not venture down the rabbit hole and explore Infinite Wonderland for yourself?

I'm both impressed and a bit uneasy seeing AI remix Alice in Wonderland through these artists' lenses. It's like a digital acid trip where the original's whimsy gets amplified but also loses some human touch. Are we celebrating creativity or just shuffling pixels? 🤔
Interesting take on AI artistry, but honestly I'm more curious about the copyright implications here. If multiple artists' styles are merged through a model, who gets credited? The original creators or the AI trainer? This feels like uncharted legal territory 🧐
This AI take on Alice's Wonderland is wild! Four artists' styles mashed up by tech—love how it blends classic vibes with futuristic flair. Makes me wonder if AI will ever out-dream human imagination. 🤯
