AI Guardian Beast Helps India Reduce Elephant Railway Accidents via Smart Early Warning System
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of India recently held a seminar dedicated to exploring how artificial intelligence can help protect elephants and railway workers. A key highlight is the AI-powered early warning system deployed in Tamil Nadu, which relies on a network of cameras equipped with thermal imaging and motion detection to spot elephants within 100 meters and automatically notify relevant authorities, prompting trains to slow down promptly.
In addition, invasive detection systems based on distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) have been installed along several elephant migration corridors across India. Alongside these technological measures, the Indian government has stressed the importance of constructing physical barriers such as bridges and underpasses to comprehensively reduce elephant casualties on railway tracks.
