AI Boosts Google.org's Future Impact

Google.org, founded with the vision to tackle the world's biggest challenges through innovation and resources, has made significant strides since its inception. Over the years, it has donated over $18 billion in products, research support, and educational programs to numerous nonprofits, universities, and educators globally. In the past decade alone, Google.org and its employees have contributed nearly $6 billion in cash funding.
The impact of Google.org's efforts is far-reaching, touching the lives of over 300 million people. Its initiatives have equipped more than 3 million individuals with skills for high-paying jobs, helped over 10 million students and teachers navigate the digital world safely, and provided relief and recovery resources to more than 100 million people in crisis. Additionally, Google.org Fellows and volunteers have dedicated over 4 million hours to high-impact projects.
At the first-ever Google.org Impact Summit in Sunnyvale, California, the team announced plans to deepen investments in three critical areas: Knowledge, Skills and Learning; Scientific Advancement; and Resilient Communities. These areas are core to Google's identity and have been central to Google.org's social impact work from the start. Many of the initiatives Google.org supports will intersect across these areas, addressing increasingly complex and interconnected global challenges.
Knowledge, Skills, and Learning
Google's mission is to "organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful." Access to information is vital for people to thrive, enabling them to acquire knowledge, discover opportunities, and build a secure future. Google.org's education programs and platforms have engaged over 90 million learners worldwide. Moving forward, this focus area will ensure that everyone, especially those in marginalized communities, can access the digital, technical, and AI skills needed to participate in the digital economy.
The potential of AI in education is clear. For instance, John Jay College and DataKind developed an AI-based program to identify students at risk of dropping out, allowing advisors to offer timely support. This initiative boosted senior graduation rates by an impressive 32%. Google.org is now committing an additional $8 million and a Google.org Fellowship to help DataKind expand this solution to 100 more colleges across the U.S.
Furthermore, Google.org will invest an additional $12 million by the end of 2024 to support organizations that are using AI to transform education equitably and responsibly. This funding will help scale AI training for educators and provide digital skills and computing education pathways to students globally.
Scientific Advancement
Google has been a leader in research and science, driving many technological breakthroughs. Over the past five years, Google.org has provided over $200 million to organizations leveraging AI to address the Sustainable Development Goals and other social challenges.
To accelerate AI's potential in tackling global issues, Google.org is launching "AI Collaboratives." These initiatives will unite organizations from various sectors to share successes, identify common challenges, and develop new AI-powered solutions. Each AI Collaborative will target a specific field where AI can have a broad positive impact. Google.org will collaborate with expert partners to set goals, and through funding, engagement with Google Research, workshops, and new studies, encourage broader participation and action.
Supporting fundamental research is also crucial for innovation, particularly when it focuses on responsibility and inclusivity. Over the next year, Google.org will commit an additional $40 million to the academic research community for responsible AI development. Google researchers will work alongside awardees to tackle complex problems and explore new ideas.
Resilient Communities
Google is dedicated to enhancing the lives of as many people as possible, both online and in the communities where its employees live and work. Google.org will continue to support programs addressing community-level challenges such as hunger, housing, and access to public benefits, while also promoting digital wellbeing and safety, especially for young people.
Empowering young people to use technology confidently and safely is essential for protecting them from online harms. The Raspberry Pi Foundation, in partnership with Google DeepMind and local experts, has developed the Experience AI program. Since its launch in April 2023, this program has reached educators in 130 countries, providing a structured learning journey that emphasizes ethics through real-world examples and culturally relevant content.
With a new $10 million investment from Google.org, the Raspberry Pi Foundation aims to expand the Experience AI program to over 2 million young people across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, fostering responsible and safe AI use. Learn more about this initiative here.
Supporting resilient communities also involves empowering the nonprofits that support them. A recent Google.org survey revealed that while four out of five nonprofits see potential in generative AI for their work, nearly half are not currently using it. To bridge this gap, Google.org is introducing new AI resources for nonprofits, whether they are just starting with AI or ready to launch an AI-based social impact project. You can find more information here.
Over the past 20 years, Google.org has partnered with dedicated organizations to bring opportunities to people worldwide. With AI, there's an incredible chance to amplify our impact in the next 20 years.

Tác động của AI đối với Google.org rất ấn tượng, nhưng tôi mong họ tập trung nhiều hơn vào các vấn đề môi trường. Số tiền quyên góp rất lớn, nhưng sự thay đổi thực sự ở đâu? 🌍💸
