AI Assembly Aids Students in Digital Future Prep

AI has the incredible power to open up new opportunities, boost the economy, and push forward scientific breakthroughs that could change and even save lives. That's why it's super important to get young people ready for a future where AI is going to be even more important. Since it kicked off in 2018, Be Internet Legends has been a key part of teaching kids about online safety, reaching over 9 million kids in the UK and more than 100 million around the world. Now, seeing how crucial AI literacy is becoming, we're expanding the program to help kids learn the skills they need to do well in a world full of AI. This week, we streamed our new "Understanding AI" assembly live to 152 schools, reaching 22,800 students. The assembly is all about explaining AI to kids in a way that's fun and easy to get. The assembly breaks down what AI is and how it works in simple terms that kids can really grasp. It shows them where AI pops up in their everyday lives, like in voice assistants at home or the traffic lights that keep cars moving smoothly on the roads. It also gets them thinking critically about AI, questioning the info it gives them, and understanding its limits. A big point the assembly makes is that AI is just a tool that can work alongside human skills and creativity, not take their place. It introduces kids to the idea of ethical AI and encourages them to think about when it's right to use AI—and to always check the age ratings on apps and other services. We put together the "Understanding AI" assembly with help from a wide range of experts, including top AI researchers, online safety pros, and teachers. By working together and using feedback from a trial run in eight schools, we made sure the assembly's content is spot-on, suitable for different ages, and keeps kids interested. The assembly also ties back to the core ideas of Be Internet Legends, especially the "Alert" part, which tells kids to stay aware of what's going on online and watch out for risks. By adding AI literacy to the program, we're trying to give kids the tools they need to be smart and responsible digital citizens.
