AI Advancement Gains New Support in Central, Eastern Europe

This week, Google has deepened its commitment to the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Technology (INSAIT) in Sofia, Bulgaria, with an investment exceeding $2 million. This move underscores our dedication to nurturing AI research and developing talent across Central and Eastern Europe.
A significant portion of this investment, over $1 million, will be allocated to provide INSAIT with access to Google Cloud's cutting-edge Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). These specialized processors are tailor-made for machine learning tasks, enabling INSAIT researchers to push the boundaries in AI model development and conduct pioneering research.
Additionally, the remaining $1 million will fund eight doctoral scholarships through the Google-INSAIT partnership. This initiative is designed to draw in and support the region's most promising individuals, cultivating a new cadre of AI specialists.
This latest investment follows our initial $3 million donation in 2022, which was used for computing resources and scholarships. Google researchers also play a crucial role in mentoring INSAIT's doctoral students, ensuring a comprehensive support system.
Supporting INSAIT's Mission
We firmly believe that Central and Eastern Europe possesses a vast reservoir of untapped potential in AI. Despite the abundance of talent, the region is underrepresented in AI research. Our investment in institutions like INSAIT is aimed at rectifying this imbalance.
Since its inception in 2022, INSAIT has emerged as a premier research hub in the region. Its goal is to create a top-tier research ecosystem that not only attracts and nurtures elite talent but also propels Bulgaria towards a flourishing high-tech economy. Professor Martin Vechev, the Founder and Scientific Director of INSAIT, has expressed that this renewed support is a testament to the institute's promising trajectory.
Together, we're working towards a more inclusive, innovative, and impactful future for AI.
