Adobe Acrobat's AI Assistant Now Simplifies Complex Contract Analysis

Decoding the Legalese: Adobe's New AI Tool for Contracts
Contracts and agreements are a part of our daily lives, whether we're consumers or business professionals. However, the dense legalese often makes them hard to understand. Adobe has stepped in to simplify this process with a new feature in its Acrobat AI, designed to help the average person navigate complex contracts.
This innovative tool automatically recognizes when a PDF is a contract and can summarize its contents, suggest relevant questions, and even spot differences between various versions of the same contract. To use this feature, you'll need to subscribe to Adobe's AI Assistant for Acrobat, which costs an additional $5 per month on top of the paid Adobe Acrobat subscription or the free Acrobat Reader.
The AI is adept at handling both regular PDFs and scanned documents formatted as contracts. It generates an overview, highlights key terms, and after analyzing the document, it provides a summary in clear, concise language, complete with citations. Clicking on a citation will take you directly to the relevant section in the source document for further review.
When dealing with multiple versions of a contract, the AI can compare up to 10 versions, pinpointing inconsistencies and discrepancies. Once you've reviewed the contract, you can collaborate with others and request e-signatures directly through Adobe Acrobat or Reader.
This new capability is versatile, applicable to various contract types such as credit card agreements, vendor contracts, loyalty programs, purchase orders, and business agreements. For instance, a business owner might use it to review a partnership agreement with their attorney, or a financial analyst could examine sales contracts. Consumers can also use it to track changes in agreements like apartment leases or mobile phone plans.
Potential Challenges and Adobe's Responses
While the tool sounds incredibly useful, it's important to consider the potential pitfalls. One major concern is the accuracy of AI in interpreting contracts. Adobe addresses this by using a combination of large language models (LLMs) and the AI and machine learning models behind its Liquid Mode technology, aiming to provide a more precise analysis of the document's structure and content.
Another concern is the use of user data for AI training. Adobe assures users that its AI adheres to strict data security protocols and follows its AI ethics processes. The company explicitly states that it will not use customer data to train its generative AI models and will prevent third-party LLMs from doing the same.
"Customers open billions of contracts in Adobe Acrobat each month and AI can be a game changer in helping simplify their experience," said Abhigyan Modi, senior vice president of Adobe Document Cloud. "We are introducing new capabilities to deliver contract intelligence in Adobe AI Assistant, making it easier for customers to understand and compare these complex documents and providing citations to help them verify responses, all while keeping their data safe."
