8 years later: A world Go champion’s reflections on AlphaGo

As a world champion in Go, my experience had always been limited to human opponents until 2016, when I faced off against AlphaGo, Google's AI system, in a series of five matches. I'll be honest, I didn't fully appreciate the strength of AI at first, and I only managed to win one game out of the five we played.
When Google first invited me to play against AlphaGo, I didn't realize the gravity of the situation. I thought it would be a walk in the park, just a fun little experiment. But as soon as the match went public, it hit me just how significant it was.
I was blown away by AlphaGo's performance. The moves it made were nothing short of brilliant. Go is an incredibly complex game, way more intricate than chess, with an astronomical number of possible board configurations. AlphaGo had to be not just calculating, but truly creative.
It was later that I found out experts had predicted AI wouldn't reach that level of sophistication for another ten years. Now, eight years after our match, AI has advanced at a breakneck pace. Go players worldwide are using AlphaGo to explore new moves, strategies, and ideas in this ancient game.
Lee Sae Dol shares his perspective on AI technology at Google Korea’s 20th anniversary in March 2024
Lee Sae Dol signing his autograph on a Go board in celebration of Google Korea’s 20th anniversary in March 2024
A note from Lee Sae Dol from his visit to Google Korea. The text reads: “Warmest congratulations on Google Korea’s 20th anniversary. I am eager to see how Google AI continues to shape a brighter future for humanity. 2024.3.19 Lee Sae Dol” .
Following those matches, Go's popularity in Korea soared even higher. AlphaGo has revolutionized how we record and analyze games, setting a new standard. Teaching Go in the age of AI is a whole different ballgame now, as students can learn so much more by studying AI-played games.
I'm a firm believer that humans and AI can work together to achieve amazing things. As long as we establish clear guidelines and standards, I'm pretty hopeful about the role AI will play in our everyday lives.

Wait, so even a world champion only beat AlphaGo once? 😳 That's wild. It really makes you wonder how much further AI has come since 2016. What games are they mastering now? Chess and Go feel… solved.
Watching the match between AlphaGo and a world Go champion was mind-blowing! It's crazy to think how far AI has come in just 8 years. The champion's reflections were insightful, but I wish there was more on how he adapted his strategy. Still, a must-watch for any Go enthusiast! 🤯
