Noam Shazeer, Google VP of Engineering and co-lead of Gemini, resigned on June 20 and joined OpenAI. A co-author of the seminal paper Attention Is All You Need, he left Google in 2021 to found Character.AI, which Google reacquired in 2024. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman welcomed him, saying it took ten years to bring him in.
