Baidu released PaddleOCR-VL-1.6, a multi-modal derivative of its ERNIE large model. It achieved 96.33% accuracy on OmnicDocBench v1.6, surpassing GPT-5.2 and Gemini-3-Pro to claim the global top spot. The lightweight 0.9B model supports over 100 languages, excels in complex document and real-world scenarios, and scored 93.19% on Real5-OmniDocBench. With 79.2K GitHub stars, it has surpassed Tesseract OCR. Code and weights are open-sourced.
