SoftBank, NEC, Honda, and Sony have formed a new company, Japan AI Foundation Model Development Company, to advance AI foundational models and compete with the U.S. and China. Backed by major Japanese firms and banks, the initiative plans to hire about 100 AI developers. SoftBank and NEC will lead model development, while Honda aims to apply the technology to autonomous driving. The project may receive up to 1 trillion yen in government support over five years from 2026, aided by relaxed data-sharing regulations to foster AI innovation.
