Luxudong Lin, former head of multimodal at Musk’s xAI, has joined Tencent as head of the multimodal content generation algorithm for Huan Yuan. He graduated from Tsinghua University in 2018 and pursued a Ph.D. at Columbia University, focusing on embedding learning, video analysis, and generative models. During his doctoral studies he interned at Tencent, Facebook AI, and Google, and was a first author on the Vx2Text framework for improved subtitle generation via multimodal fusion. After obtaining his Ph.D. in 2024 he joined Google DeepMind to work on Gemini’s multimodal pre-training and post-training. He took charge of multimodal content generation, understanding, and generative model training at xAI in November 2025. Tencent has been restructuring its Huan Yuan team this year, with researchers from OpenAI joining and departments merged under new leadership. With these additions Lin’s arrival strengthens Huan Yuan’s core team, positioning multimodal capabilities as a key future development direction.
