Amazon is in advanced talks to acquire AI startup Decart for approximately $7 billion. Decart specializes in cross-chip compatibility software, enabling seamless model switching between different AI chips. This acquisition addresses major tech firms' anxiety over computing power constraints amid chip shortages. Previously targeted by Anthropic, Decart has raised over $400 million and boasts a valuation nearing $4 billion. The deal would significantly enhance AWS's cloud scheduling capabilities by providing a flexible translation layer, reducing dependency on single chip suppliers. If finalized, it marks a strategic move to secure critical infrastructure advantages in the competitive AI landscape.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella calls for an emergency stop mechanism for advanced AI models. He advocates separating underlying models from control frameworks to ensure externalized security and human-readable execution evidence. This approach allows authorized personnel to pause or shut down models at any time, reflecting a defensive stance against compromised black-box systems. The proposal aligns with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s cautious development plan, highlighting urgent industry consensus on establishing transparent, controllable standards to balance innovation with safety as AI autonomy increases.
